We are David and Kaoru Coates, we met at Emily Carr College many years ago. Kaoru graduated with a Diploma in 3D with ceramics as a major (1991) and David in Graphic Design (1988). Kaoru was born in Japan and immigrated to Canada in 1987 when she was 19. David was born in Toronto and his family moved to Vancouver in 1970 when he was 9. After decades in the corporate design world being a managing partner and bookkeeper of a well known place branding firm, Ion Brand Design, we're back making art together. We're having a lot of fun and working with great people who carry our work in their retail stores. We are up to eight retailers, and regularly participate in three or four handicraft markets per year. While Riding the Pine is still a "hobby" business for us, we are moving quickly toward it becoming a full time gig.
